What is CBT? – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Here at Safe New Futures, our main strategy to help people suffering with mental health issues is ‘CBT’ therapy. Although CBT is a great form of therapy not everyone has access to it so a lot of people are still unsure what it is and the great benefits this type of therapy actually has on people’s lives.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the forms of talking therapies available in the UK which can be used to treat people with a wide range of mental health problems. CBT is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion) and how we act (behaviour) all interact together. It’s specifically based on the fact that our thoughts determine our feelings and behaviour.

Therefore if a person has any unrealistic/negative thoughts it can cause a huge amount of distress which can result in problems. When a person is suffering with psychological distress the way that they interpret situations becomes distorted and then therefore has a negative impact on actions a person takes.

This is why cognitive behavioural therapy is so important to help the people who need it most. It can change peoples lives forever, this is why we as a charity specialise in this kind of therapy.
