Breaking barriers, building futures

Across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Surrey and some of the most deprived communities in Southampton, too many young people and adults are struggling with low confidence, poor mental health, unemployment and a loss of direction. The challenges left behind by the pandemic have only intensified these issues, with rising anxiety, social isolation and reduced access to support services.

At Safe New Futures, we see every day how these barriers can leave people feeling stuck, discouraged and unsure of where to turn next. But we also see something else: potential — often hidden, but always there.

For more than 30 years, our charity has been helping individuals rediscover that potential and move confidently towards brighter futures.

Our five-week strengths-based programme blends Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques with practical vocational learning. This combination is powerful: it helps people understand what is holding them back, challenge negative thinking patterns, build resilience and develop the confidence to take action.

Participants attend group sessions that create a safe, supportive environment where they can:

  • Build self-esteem and motivation
  • Learn new strategies for managing anxiety or low mood
  • Explore strengths and aspirations
  • Gain practical tools for employment, education or training
  • Connect with others who understand their experiences

Each person receives a personalised action plan and follow-up support for up to six months, ensuring they remain motivated and supported long after the programme ends.

Independent research from the University of Southampton has shown that our approach leads to long-lasting improvements in wellbeing and mental health, and that these changes directly support people into sustainable employment or learning.

The most powerful stories come from our participants themselves:

“The course was totally life changing. I had lost hope and I found it on your course.”
“I felt lost and anxious. During the programme I became more confident and smashed a job interview.”
“The facilitators’ positivity was immeasurable. I started a new job and have been working really hard.”

Behind every story is a person who arrived feeling stuck and left with renewed confidence, clarity and direction.

Our work has never been more vital. Young people are facing unprecedented challenges in the job market, with 60% reporting they don’t feel prepared for the workplace. Adults are experiencing higher levels of anxiety and depression linked to unemployment and financial hardship.

This is why Safe New Futures continues to expand its reach, working closely with jobcentres, councils, schools, colleges and local charities to make sure people who need support can access it quickly.

We believe every person deserves the opportunity to build a future they feel proud of, and we are committed to helping them get there.

With continued support from funders, partners and our community, Safe New Futures will keep delivering life-changing programmes that empower people to move forward with resilience, purpose and hope.
